EP Review: Cabezudos

The last time that I was genuinely excited by an EP was from The Hummingbirds quite some time ago. However, around a month ago I had a serious case of deja vu; a buzz, a thrill and a fever which is often short lived with 'fresh new music'. Once again, with another band from the music capital Liverpool: Cabezudos.

Now, of course I'm going to be slightly biased when it comes to Liverpool music. I've been a big fan of new music since I first started going to gigs when I was 14 and realised that one of my highlights was listening to the support acts and then finding their music on MySpace the next day. Going to gigs in Birmingham was my favourite thing to do, until I moved to Liverpool and realised that the venues were busier and people were giving these fairly unknown bands a real chance.

Cabezudos are definitely worth a real chance right now. They recently filled the Zanzibar with their EP launch and their fresh new sound. Their EP 'She Waits' has a youthful sound to it but their lyrics and the obvious hard work and effort which has gone into each song is very mature. It makes it a very interesting listen, especially when you pick up on the old blues vibes.

The band is made up of Jack Hughes on vocals, Chris Bolton on guitar, Tom Maher on bass guitar & backing vocals and Harry Strachan on drums. The band's main music inspirations really reflect on their style of music in their EP with their favourite acts being everything from The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones to The Who and The Beach Boys.
The 'She Waits' EP includes 'Foolish' a mellow track which rips into some serious rock and roll just as you begin to chill out whilst listening to it, it sure is full of surprises! 'She Waits' is upbeat and fun from the start and definitely the most sing-along track on the EP.

'I've Never Seen' is the most mature song on the EP and in my opinion, is the song which you can pick up their biggest influences the most. If you listen carefully, you will also pick up on snippets of thunder and rain which are surprisingly used too! The EP is completed with 'Could You Be Wrong' which is the most relaxed and easy listening track, listen out for the trumpet too which quite simply blew my mind!

For me, my favourite track is 'Could You Be Wrong' but all the songs on their fantastic little EP are quite something, with no song the same as the last.

After giving the EP a good listen, it's impressive to think that Cabezudos have only been together as a band since April 2015 and their first gig was only in July 2015. However, just because they are a very new band, this doesn't mean that they shouldn't be taken seriously. These boys are talented and incredibly motivated.

If you get the chance to go to a Cabezudos gig, don't miss it! They are currently planning gigs around the UK for next year, hopefully with a tour during the summer months. Their next gig will be supporting Billy Bibby, the previous guitarist for Catfish and the Bottlemen, at Studio 2 on Parr Street in Liverpool in February.
